There is much to like about Easytranscript: it is available for multiple platforms, it is a breeze to get it up and running, you can easily get started with a new project, it has a clear and user friendly interface, you are offered everything you need for transcription purposes, you won’t have to pay anything to use Easytranscript because it is free and open source.

As mentioned above, Easytranscript is available for multiple platforms. And to be more precise, this transcription tool can be used on machines powered by Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux. Please note that Easytranscript is a Java-based application. You need to have Java on your machine for Easytranscript to work. It must be mentioned here that Easytranscript also needs the VLC media player.

By default, a prompt shows up at startup and invites you to import an existing project, load a previously created project, or create a new project. Choose the last option and a wizard will take you through all the steps you need to take to create a new project: choose where the project will be saved; create a new transcript or open an existing one; pick a media file (audio or video); choose if you want to automatically record work time.

Easytranscript has a user friendly interface that is divided into two panels. The one to the left displays your transcription; the one to the right allows you to play the video file you selected when setting up a new project. Playback buttons are displayed below these two panels. Above these two panels there’s a File Menu and a toolbar with links to various features and functions.

Easytranscript, as previously mentioned, gives you everything you need for transcription: easy to use editor for text; media player for audio and video files; save your project, export your project, export transcript, print transcript; undo/redo function; play with the text formatting; search and replace function; automatic work time monitoring; shortkeys and hotkeys; insert time stamp; change spokesperson.

Easytranscript is free and open source software released under a GNU General Public License (GPL). Do consider making a donation if you find the application useful.

If transcriptions are part of your life and if you need a free, user friendly, and very useful transcription tool, you’re very well advised to get Easytranscript.
